Traditional Funeral Services

Components of a Traditional Funeral

A funeral service, whether traditional or more modern has two functions: to acknowledge the death and lifetime achievements of an individual and to bring grieving family members and friends together in support of one another during this difficult time.

Visitation

This is often called a viewing, or a wake. Guest come to pay their respects to the deceased by viewing the casketed body and spending time with the grieving family. A visitation can take place any time before the funeral service.

Funeral Service

The event commonly takes place at the funeral home, a church or at the graveside. It can include music, reading of literacy or religious passages, eulogies, prayers or the signing of hymns.

Committal Service

If the family plans to bury the deceased, a vehicle procession is formed and the proceeds to the cemetery. Prayers of committal of the body to the earth are offer, followed by burial of the casket.

 Reception

Many people choose to hold this post service gathering or repast at a reception hall. This is a time to share a meal, memories, laughter and support.
